What Life Coaches Need To Stop Saying

A sincere and honest love letter from me to you...

It's not that you aren't doing a great job at helping your clients to achieve their goals.

And it's not that I don't believe that you could be the next Tony Robbins or Louise Hay... touching the lives of thousands around the globe. Your work is totally needed in this world, and the way the 'Life Coaching' industry is growing is a great reflection of how society is slowly opening itself up to a new way of operating. Brilliant!

It's got absolutely nothing to do with that... rather, everything to do with how you are communicating.

Please, please, please! Start to learn about marketing and communication and take it as seriously as you take your coaching... and what ever you do, don't say:

I help women/men to find their passion and live a

life they love

Sigh...

Now before I get on my high-horse about what really needs to change - I have to confess... I have walked the path of a 'Life Coach' in my early entrepreneur years, and I did use those exact words (cringe!). In fact in the past I've also honoured myself with titles such as:

  • Lifestyle Therapist; &

  • Creative Inspirator (which isn't even a word by the way)

The only thing this language and these titles achieved were to confuse the bejesus out of anyone who asked me what I did... including myself sometimes.

Communication Tip #1: Creativity is awesome... when used at the right time.

You see, if you are budding into the world of Life Coaching, or any healing modality for that matter. I can guarantee you the number #1 thing they didn't teach you in your training is how to communicate well to attract clients to your work. They may have provided you with business models and 'sales' techniques... but did they teach you to communicate online like a human to other human beings?

Communication Tip #2: Marketing styles you have been exposed to over your lifetime and have learned sub-consciously while watching television, listening to the radio, passing billboards and even going to the movies... actually don't work anymore. Unlearn it quick!

Human beings are a pretty intelligent

lot, so respect the audience

you are speaking to.

Generally most of those who are engaging with social media and the internet have learned to be able to see through shallow words... and not only that, if the words are wishy-washy and flying high in a world of passion and loving life... well... to be honest... next please.

What your audience is looking for, on a number of levels, is connection.

Communication Tip #3: Connection is not created by talking about how great you are, or barking out your latest technique down a Facebook LIVE. Connection is created by your audience understanding that you get them, and you opening a door for them to get to know you.

Which brings me to my last point - if you don't know who you are talking to, then you will not be connecting with anyone. You'll feel crap because you'll not be attracting any clients, and start questioning what you are doing and asking 'Am I really cut out for this work anyway...?"

The self-doubt and sabotage spiral begins!... BUT it's not true! The answer lies in your communication.

Here is the gold of this blog:

Basically see this blog post here... it's specifically speaking to Life Coaches because guess what... they are an audience I love to talk to, work with and assist. How have I connected with you here?...

  • I've talked about people you probably know

  • Shared how I've been on a similar journey and been confused by what to say

  • I've shared I know you use social media to attract people to your work

  • I've used an image of myself so you can put a face to my words and perhaps some of you may even be imagining me say these words to you, rather than just reading it... particularly if you love my work and follow me.

I haven't asked you a question or made a title like 'Are you struggling to attract new clients to your work? and listed the solution... No, why? Because that would be BORING!! and you wouldn't have taken notice of my post. Plus, because I've done my homework, completed interviews and worked with so many Life Coaches I know this is an issue... so to help you, I've intertwined some valuable tips throughout the content to help you through.... do you see what I'm getting at here?

Connection is where it's at.

Communication Tip #4: Know your audience and get specific.

I do love you.

I love your work, I love your personality, I love your human-ness and I know you have the ability to be real and to share in a connective way on social media.

Do it.. be the one that's different. There are plenty of fish in the sea - but all it takes is one to capture the attention of another for a new chapter to begin.

Big love,

Melanie xo
